BARANGAROO SOUTH

Barangaroo South will be a truly great urban precinct, featuring a public waterfront, shops, a department store, supermarkets, waterfront restaurants, a museum, library, an international hotel, 500 apartments, including key worker housing, and a financial headquarters for top Australian and international corporations.

The Southern Cove is designed to bring people onto the waterfront and become a place for waterside activities. Hickson Road will be designed to become a great city boulevard and a vital public transport connection, including a major pedestrian connection through to Wynyard station and the city.

It will have a pedestrian and cycle friendly waterfront promenade, creating the entry statement for the hotel on the new public pier and commercial buildings which will house major national and international corporations. It will offer an eclectic mix of experiences from restaurants and bars to farmers market and retail stores.

Construction work is expected to commence on site in late 2010, with the first building targeted for completion in 2014.

The Lend Lease proposal requires a further public process to permit the elements that fall outside the current Concept Plan for Barangaroo. Lend Lease will submit an application to the NSW Department of Planning, expected to be lodged during 2010.

Having invited Expressions of Interest from around the world to design and develop the first stage of Barangaroo, the Government released a shortlist of proponents in September 2008.

  • The three proponents were given until 31 March 2009 to submit their plans for the site. On 11 August 2009, the Government announced it had invited Brookfield Multiplex and Lend Lease to submit more detailed bids.

  • Final phase bids were lodged in November 2009.

  • On 20 December 2009, the Government announced that Lend Lease had been selected to develop and create the $6 billion Stage 1 development.

  • On 5 March 2010, the Barangaroo Delivery Authority released a summary of the Issues of Principle which describe those areas of the winning design from Lend Lease, where further work is required to satisfy the important public aspects of the plan.  The full 20 items which form part of the agreement as executed can be found in the attached pdf.
