Barangaroo timeline

The creation of Barangaroo is long term and will take around 20 years to complete the buildings and infrastructure.  When complete Barangaroo will accommodate over 23,000 workers and residents, in addition to hosting an estimated 33,000 visitors a day or 12 million a year.

An indicative timeline is as follows:


  • Commenced bulk excavation for basement construction and first commercial towers at Barangaroo South
  • Barangaroo Reserve construction continued
  • Commenced construction of Wynyard Walk


  • Continue construction of commercial towers at Barangaroo South
  • Temporary cruise passenger terminal closes and new terminal opens at White Bay
  • Barangaroo Reserve construction continues
  • Central Barangaroo master planning


  • Barangaroo Reserve construction continues
  • Public brief for first phase residential in Central Barangaroo commences
  • Commence Barangaroo South foreshore residential buildings and public domain
  • Continue construction of commercial towers at Barangaroo South
  • Completion of Northern Cove at Barangaroo Reserve


  • Barangaroo Reserve officially opens
  • Financial and retail district comes to live with the opening of restaurants, cafes and shops
  • Barangaroo Reserve and Central Barangaroo waterfront promenade opened
  • First commercial tower (International Towers Two) opened
  • First two residential buildings, Anadara and Alexander, completed
  • Napoleon Bridge opens
  • Remediation onsite and of Hickson Road commences
  • NSW Government announces the Barangaroo Metro Station as an inclusion on the new Chatswood to Bankstown line (metro video)
  • Central Barangaroo tender process re-opens


  • Second commercial tower (International Towers Three) open
  • First Artistic Associates, Amanda Jane Reynolds and Genevieve Grieves appointed
  • Deconstruction of Harbour Control Tower commences
  • Construction of Barangaroo Ferry Hub underway
  • Submissions for the development of Central Barangaroo close. Announcement expected mid-2017
  • Planning Assessment Commission recommend Modification 8 to the Barangaroo Concept Plan for Stage 1b of Barangaroo South be approved
  • Public domain at southern end of precinct open
  • September 2016 Wynyard Walk & Sussex Bridge open
  • Shell Wall 2015 is unveiled on Alexander building as the first public artwork
  • One of the world’s most celebrated chefs, Rene Redzepi opens Noma Australia in residence for ten weeks


  • Barangaroo Ferry Hub opens
  • Deconstruction of Harbour Control Tower completed signalling official completion of works to Barangaroo Reserve
  • Completion of International House Sydney, Australia’s first Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) building
  • Remediation continues with the excavation of Hickson Road and the Barangaroo site
  • Announcement of the successful bidder for Central Barangaroo and commencement of planning


  • Commencement of construction of Sydney Metro


  • Completion of Sydney Metro.
  • Project complete
