HEADLAND PARK
The northern area of Barangaroo will see the development of a new, spectacular headland park for the inner harbour based on the shoreline that existed in 1836. The Headland Park will mirror Balls Head, Goat Island and eventually Ballast Point, to complete the archipelago of green headlands characteristic of Sydney Harbour. The creation of the Headland Park continues the NSW Government's commitment to transforming western harbour headlands into open space for the people of NSW. In October 2009, the NSW Government launched an international search for a team to design the new harbour side Headland Park and urban waterfront at Barangaroo. Leading landscape, architecture and urban design companies were invited to submit expressions of interest. The winning design team announced in February 2010, Johnson Pilton Walker, in association with Peter Walker and Partners Landscape Architecture, will work with the Barangaroo Delivery Authority to design the new Headland Park and other public spaces. This highly regarded team will design key open space features for the waterfront commercial, residential and leisure precinct, including the creation of the harbourside park and restoration of the entire harbour headland to a more natural shape. The Headland Park will be created from the materials excavated and in some cases, remediated, from the basements in Barangaroo South, the gas works remediation zone and the Northern and Southern coves. This ‘cut and fill’ principle satisfies best standards in sustainable development. The creation of the Headland Park will be subject to statutory planning processes, including public exhibition and public comment phases run by the Department of Planning. The applications for these works are expected to be lodged during 2010.
