History

Past to Future

19TH CENTURY

  • Windmills give rise to the “Millers Point” local area name.
  • Gas lighting introduced, leading to construction of large gas works.
  • Sail technology gives way to steamships and privately owned wharves.

20TH CENTURY

  • Plague! The State Government seizes control of the area.
  • The landscape is dramatically cut to create Hickson Road. The shore is lined with long wharves and bond stores as at Walsh Bay.
  • The headland is removed and a concrete apron built.

21ST CENTURY

  • Modern ships require more space and direct access to freight rail. The site becomes unsustainable, and Ports Botany and Kembla are expanded to increase New South Wales’ export capacity.
  • Sydney has emerged as a business and information centre within the Asia Pacific region, creating a new source of economic prosperity for NSW.
  • A growing economy increases demand for modern working spaces while our growing population needs more recreational public space.
  • NSW Government resolves to create a new western edge to the city as well as new foreshore parkland for the community.
