Pier Pavilion Design Unveiled

15 Dec 2020

A spectacular new public pavilion on Sydney’s waterfront is closer to reality after the NSW Government announced the winner of a design competition at Barangaroo today.

The winning design by Jessica Spresser (SPRESSER) + Peter Besley celebrates the natural elements of land, sea and sky that compose the site.

It includes a green rooftop garden and 123 columns built using white ‘oyster concrete’ from local oyster shells, and was chosen for its timeless appeal, and relationship to its surroundings.

The NSW Government opened the national design competition in June and a competition jury comprised of leading figures in the Australian architectural community was assembled to judge the Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the entries. The Jury narrowed more than 170 entries to five finalists and decided on the winner.

The Pier Pavilion will be located on the prime waterfront setting at Watermans Cove. It will be used for a broad range of programmed events and be open year-round for people to gather and relax at Sydney’s iconic harbour.

It is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to ensure more than half of Barangaroo is high quality and accessible public space.

With the winner selected, the design will undergo refinement before Infrastructure NSW lodges a development application for construction.
