Until July, Big hART will transform the Cutaway into an underground creative space where skateboarders, musicians and digital artists collaborate to develop a new show called SKATE.

SKATE will be a ground-breaking new theatre work, combining the artistry of skateboarding and the universal language of rhythm. The fusion of music, projection and movement, using responsive technology, will create a breathtaking sensory experience.

Skateboarders of all ages and skill levels are invited to experience the making of SKATE, with an exhilarating program of events until 20 July.

Open Skate

On select Saturdays, free Open Skate sessions welcome anyone, of any skill level, to swing by the Cutaway to skate the space, watch sections of the show in progress, and get involved with the creativity of the SKATE project. Meet the artists and skaters, get a behind-the-scenes look at the show, explore the tech, and learn more about the artistry of combining skateboarding, music and light.

TRANSITIONS AT THE CUTAWAY

Every few weeks, audiences can get a first look at new sections of the show as they are trialled at free public events called Transitions. See what it means to paint with light and sound as skateboarding ignites the stage through responsive technology.

ABOUT BIG HART

Big hART is the first artist in residence for the Cutaway. The residency brings Australia's leading arts and social change organisation to Barangaroo, offering Sydneysiders access to a public program of vibrant, unique experiences.

Founded in 1992, Big hART have worked in over 50 disadvantaged communities and won 45 awards. SKATE is underpinned by a social impact investment strategy which will see all profits from the production re-invested in disadvantaged communities across the country.

Skateboarding has been a major focus in Big hART’s work with young people for twelve years. The organisation has worked with skaters in various social impact programs from early projects in Tasmania, to the famed White Night events at Melbourne skate parks, to a recent creative development in Melbourne in 2017.
