Blak Box

2 - 24 June 2018
Urban Theatre Projects

Blak Box, a state-of-the-art sound installation by Urban Theatre Projects (UTP) used sound as a creative medium to share the First People’s past, present and future with Barangaroo through a range of contemporary Aboriginal voices.

Purposely designed without floors, it was a place-based listening space inspired by the First People’s practice of ‘deep listening’ combining stories, music and pauses in a compelling manner.

‘HumEchoChorus’(meaning past, present and future stories), the sound program curated by Daniel Browning beautifully combined oral histories of the Barangaroo harbour headland before 1788, informal interviews and spoken word performances.

Blak Box was a truly immersive experience of original Aboriginal music, poetry and language. It invited listeners to hear stories and gain a deeper and broader understanding of contemporary Aboriginality.

The Barangaroo Delivery Authority commissioned Blak Box as part of a new partnership. Blak Box had its world premiere season in Barangaroo Reserve from 2 - 24 June 2018.
