Major milestone reached at the Cutaway

The Cutaway reaches halfway point in evolution to become a premier events and cultural destination.
Major milestone reached at the Cutaway

The Cutaway is well on its way to becoming one of Sydney’s leading cultural and event spaces. Undergoing an expansive fitout, this transformative project at Barangaroo has achieved a key milestone, reaching the construction halfway point.

Designed by fjcstudio, delivered by FDC Construction & Fitout, and led by Infrastructure NSW, this project will create a world-class, multipurpose facility spanning almost 10,000 sqm over three levels.

Key features and design highlights

  • Versatile event spaces: The existing space is being reconfigured to create two new internal levels offering a variety of spaces including the main event hall, a pre-function space, a temporary gallery, a lobby and a dedicated First Nations education space. The much-loved sandstone wall remains a centrepiece of the main event hall.

  • Architectural timber trees: Thirteen timber trees reaching up to 13 metres in height and clad onto existing concrete columns blend engineering brilliance with natural elegance.

  • Natural light and acoustic excellence: Three existing voids near the sandstone wall are being reimagined to enhance natural light. Skylights will ensure sunlight access while maintaining acoustic separation from the street and protecting the event hall from weather.

Aligned with Barangaroo’s sustainability principles, the project has successfully diverted 90% of construction waste from landfill, and reduced carbon emissions by more than 50% compared with standard benchmarks.

Accessible via the new Barangaroo Metro Station, the Cutaway is poised to become a cultural destination that not only enriches Sydney’s vibrant arts scene but also drives local job creation and tourism.

Completion is expected by the end of 2025, with event programming commencing in 2026. Learn more about the Cutaway fitout project.
