Beloved Petersham institution Sweet Belém arrives at Barangaroo

One of Sydney’s most-loved Portuguese bakeries has officially opened at The Streets of Barangaroo.

Bringing its famous Portuguese custard tarts, traditional pastries and exciting new menu additions to the waterfront precinct, Sweet Belém has launched its second Sydney location, giving city workers, locals and visitors easier access to the bakery’s cult-favourite treats.

A family-owned Portuguese pastry boutique, Sweet Belém was founded by João De Almeida and has been led by chef and owner Jose Silva since 2012. The Petersham original has earned a loyal following for its authentic Portuguese pastries, most notably its renowned pastel de nata – a hand-crafted egg custard tart baked fresh daily.

Growing up in Portugal, Silva developed a passion for pastry from a young age, working in kitchens from the age of 13 before building an impressive culinary career in Sydney. After years leading the kitchen at Guillaume at Bennelong, he took over Sweet Belém and continued its tradition of quality, authenticity and craftsmanship.

The new Barangaroo store stays true to the spirit of the Petersham institution, serving the bakery’s much-loved classics alongside several new offerings created especially for the new location.
