Discover the top 7 benefits of saunas in Barangaroo

From brain boosts to mood lifts, here’s why saunas are winter’s hottest wellness trend.
This August, Barangaroo You Wellness Month invites you to reconnect with movement, community and good old-fashioned self-care. And there’s no better place to start than with a session at the Cedar & Salt Pop-up Sauna. This beautifully built, Nordic-style woodfired sauna perched by the sea at Marrinawi Cove will leave you glowing, grounded and revitalised.

Here’s why this ancient wellness ritual is suddenly on everyone’s radar.

1. Saunas are the original self-care ritual

The word sauna comes from an old Finnish term meaning “earth” or “snow pit”, and it’s been central to life in Finland for over 2,000 years. Early saunas were dug into hillsides and heated with hot rocks. Over time, they evolved into timber structures with wood-fired stoves, birch-scented air and the sacred ritual of löyly (that’s the steam made when water hits the stones).

Saunas were where babies were born, meat was cured, the sick were healed, and family bonds were forged. Some call it “the poor man’s pharmacy.” Whatever you call it, the experience can be transforming and is undeniably good for you.

2. You’ll sweat your way to better health

Even a short time in a sauna can boost circulation, clear your skin, and stimulate endorphins – your body’s natural happy hormones. Research suggests regular sauna sessions may improve cardiovascular health, reduce blood pressure, and even help your immune system regulate better in winter. Other benefits can include muscle recovery post workouts, greater joint movement and reduced stress and inflammation. Some believe that this style of sauna can help ease symptoms of asthma and arthritis pain too. Talk about the full package!

3. Contrast therapy = next-level energy

The Cedar & Salt Pop-up Sauna includes the option for a refreshing cold plunge and it’s not just for the thrill-seekers. Alternating hot and cold exposure (also known as contrast therapy) activates your lymphatic and vascular systems, encouraging detoxification and boosting circulation. You’ll feel alert, alive and like you’ve hit reset on every cell in your body. Steam, chill, repeat.

4. It’s a mental health moment

Regular sauna use is linked to reduced stress, improved mood and better sleep. It's your chance to switch off from screens, breathe deeply and reset your nervous system all without lifting a finger (unless you’re pouring water over the rocks). The sense of community and connection in a group sauna can also be a big mood booster.

5. It’s communal, calming and meditative

In Finland, saunas are as social as they are sacred. They’re places to bond, reflect and connect without pressure or small talk. Barangaroo’s Cedar & Salt experience channels that same energy: group sessions that feel grounding, inclusive and low-key luxurious. Prefer something quieter? You can book a private sauna too.

6. Nordic roots, coastal soul

The Cedar & Salt Pop-up Sauna isn’t just another wellness trend; it’s an experience grounded in tradition and brought home with purpose. Founded by a Northern Beaches local, Cedar & Salt was born from time spent travelling through Scandinavia and the Arctic Circle, where sauna culture is deeply embedded in daily life. Inspired by the simplicity, ritual and community of those Nordic heat rooms, he set out to reimagine that experience for the Australian coast. The result? A beautifully crafted sauna space that brings global wellness wisdom to our own salty backyard.

7. New to the sauna scene? Here’s what to know

  • What to bring. The sauna is small so just bring the essentials: swimwear, plenty of water and two towels (one to sit on and one to dry yourself with).

  • Shower first if possible. Keeps the heat room clean and helps you sweat better.

  • Don’t be a hero. Start with 5–15 minutes, then cool off. Listen to your body.

  • Be mindful. Keep conversations low-key, and avoid perfumes, phones or snacks.

  • Respect the löyly. Whoever’s nearest to the water bucket gets to control the steam.
