1. Saunas are the original self-care ritual
The word sauna comes from an old Finnish term meaning “earth” or “snow pit”, and it’s been central to life in Finland for over 2,000 years. Early saunas were dug into hillsides and heated with hot rocks. Over time, they evolved into timber structures with wood-fired stoves, birch-scented air and the sacred ritual of löyly (that’s the steam made when water hits the stones).
Saunas were where babies were born, meat was cured, the sick were healed, and family bonds were forged. Some call it “the poor man’s pharmacy.” Whatever you call it, the experience can be transforming and is undeniably good for you.

7. New to the sauna scene? Here’s what to know
-
What to bring. The sauna is small so just bring the essentials: swimwear, plenty of water and two towels (one to sit on and one to dry yourself with).
-
Shower first if possible. Keeps the heat room clean and helps you sweat better.
-
Don’t be a hero. Start with 5–15 minutes, then cool off. Listen to your body.
-
Be mindful. Keep conversations low-key, and avoid perfumes, phones or snacks.
-
Respect the löyly. Whoever’s nearest to the water bucket gets to control the steam.
