Marrinawi Cove in Barangaroo Reserve is a hidden harbourside gem, featuring a safe swimming enclosure, scenic sandstone, native flora, and sparkling Sydney Harbour waters. Its a perfect urban escape for relaxation and recreation.

Discover Marrinawi Cove, a stunning swimming spot tucked away at the northern end of Barangaroo Reserve. This 700 square metre cove offers a sheltered and scenic escape, where native flora and sculpted sandstone meet the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour.

Marrinawi Cove features a designated swimming enclosure, created to safely revive harbour swimming in the heart of the city. The area is equipped with safety netting, signage, railing, and a shower, making it an accessible and enjoyable space for the community to cool off and relax.

Know Before You Go

This is a natural environment, so swimmers should take caution. The area may include slippery rocks, oysters, algae, and marine life. Suitable footwear is recommended, and all visitors are encouraged to follow safety signage and swim responsibly.

Facilities and Amenities
Toilets and a shower are available nearby at the former Sewerage Pump House, located near the Towns Place entrance.

Water Quality and Safety
Water quality at Marrinawi Cove is regularly tested and monitored through Beachwatch. You can view the latest results here.

The swimming enclosure includes a shark net anchored to the harbour floor, offering protection from marine predators. While the area is not patrolled by lifeguards, it is monitored by Barangaroo Rangers as part of wider precinct safety systems.

Additional Information

  • Fishing is not permitted at Barangaroo.
  • Dogs are allowed to swim but must be on a leash while walking in the area.
  • Oyster and algae growth are managed with periodic cleaning and maintenance closures, announced in advance.

Upgrade works to Marrinawi Cove  

From 25 September, access to Marrinawi Cove will be impacted as works are undertaken to upgrade the area.  

The enhancements reflect community feedback that spoke to the desire for better access, more space and improved amenities in the Cove. Works are expected to take three months to complete

What’s to come:

  • A larger swimming area with a realigned shark net
  • A new double outdoor shower
  • Non-slip stairs and ladders for safer water access
  • Handrails to the water for easier access
  • Integrated sandstone steps for improved water entry from the rocks
  • Increased leisure space with the relocation of sandstone blocks
  • A depth marker to support swimmer safety.

Please note that during construction, Marrinawi Cove will be closed for swimming. For your safety, please follow all signage and directions on site.
